Advice for a Yung Tradesman
With Víctor Hermoso. 2018, interactive installation, website
A stationary bicycle uses the rider’s pedalling to scroll through an endless website. Stock images are layered over Benjamin Franklin’s text *Advice to a Young Tradesman*, to which the phrase “time is money” is attributed, making it difficult to read. Weber considered this text constitutive of the capitalist spirit: it is a letter to a young friend offering advice on business. It calls for the internalization of business axioms—maximum profit and behavioural optimization—turning all of life into work and putting subjectivity to work. The pedalling that moves us through the website, a fitness exercise and a form of work on the self, is equated with a swarm of fingers and eyes sliding across countless screens and interfaces. Through demands for constant presence, visibility and an endlessly unsatisfied state of exposure, surplus value is produced as metadata from subjectivities that exploit themselves as a resource of biodiversity.
