Leisure and Order: installation overview

El ocio y el orden

2024 , 169 beach umbrellas, UV resin 3D prints (80 × 80 × 40 cm); video (18’06”)

During the pandemic I took up beach volleyball, an activity that could be done outdoors. But when summer arrived, the beach changed and we could no longer use it in the same way: a temporary architectural element had appeared—the beach umbrella, an emblem of sun-and-sea tourism. Available for rent for a limited time, it colonised public beach space, empty yet full of possibilities. Perhaps paradoxically, it restricted possible uses of the place through leisure, privatising and narrowing it.

I realised that leisure, which we associate with freedom and disorder, can also produce social, economic and spatial order. A video accompanies the installation. In long, static shots, it shows different places on Mallorca filmed with a technique that makes them look like miniatures.
