La festa (im)possible

La festa (im)possible

(The (im)possible party)

2020, digital photographs (serie of 4), photogrammetry

These images show my former apartment in Barcelona during lockdown. I stayed there alone until I had to leave, unable to afford the rent after exhausting negotiations with the real-estate agency. After living there for five years, and unable to say goodbye properly with all the people who had passed through, I decided to preserve the space digitally. Using photogrammetry, a technique for producing three-dimensional models from multiple flat photographs, I documented the living room of the home I inevitably had to leave.

The photographs in this series are 2D images generated from that 3D model. The distortions produced by the software as it interprets volume from photographs give the space a painterly quality, moving away from the hyperrealistic style that we often associate with photography’s documentary function.

The room becomes an intimate monument to a past that never happened. Perhaps one day we will be able to visit it and recreate this (im)possible party.
